In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. -Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD

Lest we forget...

I still think of my Great Uncle much more at this time of year because of remembrance. RIP

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

-Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD

Me and my uncle spent a couple of holidays now in France and Belgium visiting all the war-time battle sites and memorials, including the grave of one of my great-uncles who served and died in the Great War. I remember distinctly visiting the site where that poem was written, and just tried imagining what it was like. My imagination terrified me, and I'm sure it was 10 times worse than that. I thank those who fought so that I might enjoy my freedom today. It is easy to take it for granted when faced with modern concerns.
