You can see the onion news review here.

Then there's Shatner's cameo...

OK, more seriously. I thought they really nailed the casting. Particularly Simon Pegg, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin.

The movie was fun and interesting. I just wish they didn't erase all of Star Trek in the process.

They clearly decided to call in an air strike and start over.

Uhura was hot. I liked it, probably best flick I've seen in some time. Even the wife said she'd go see it again. But I'm also not into the whole "sacredness" of it either. Then there's the whole "red matter" thing....J J Abrams seems obsessed with time/dimensional travel on all his shows right now.

I thought that Spock and in particular McCoy were cast well, I couldn't stand Simon Pegg and his attempted Scottish accent though.

I just wish they didn't erase all of Star Trek in the process.

This :-(

Once I realised what was going on the rest of it was spoiled for me, although what references to TOS I managed to pick up on still made me smile (red shirt, eh? I'm sure you'll be around for a long time. Also "I have been and always shall be your friend", "you green blooded...", "I'm a doctor, not a...", etc).

You could argue that they are all becoming the people they were destined to be, or some such thing, although there's no coming back from what happened to Vulcan...

I think I need to try to put the destruction of all previous Trek out of my mind and go see it again!

One thing though - they didn't say much about the Khan brain worm (I'm sure it has a much snazzier name than that) inside Pike - I wonder if that's to be revisited in the next one?

Well accordign to temporal physics theory, the old star trek is still there. Their reality is now different from that of the old members. If that had not been the case, spock would well have vanished or even possibly changed personality radically in the middle of the show. So you can think of it more like they entered another universe such as when they crossed over into the Evil reality during the first series, TNG and DS9. (they overused that one didnt they). The reality they are in is slightly different. This is what spock said to kirk on the bridge when kirk assumed Nero knew the outcome of events. In fact in some temporal physics theories, every black hole is a gateway to another alternate reality since it infinitely warps space time. As for vulcan, I was horrified with the thought of 6 billion people killed in a single move. I think we were supposed to be horrified by that but ever since I have had children I have become really sensitive to those things. But I thought it was the best star trek movie since Wrath of Khan.

It was really good. I liked it. I thought Bones was about the best one, I can see the old bones in him and it was awesome. Everyone else seemd like a new character to me, even spock.

I can't believe I'm getting down and dirty with this. :D There is serious precedent in the trek universe that time travel does not cause a new universe to be created - that there is but one instance and the present is changed when someone travels to the past. Starting with the TOS episode "City on the Edge of Forever" and continuing all through TNG, the movies, and of course Voyager, the effects of time travel have immediate consequences. One clear precedent I can think of offhand is when Guinan knew Picard before he had experienced their meeting because they met in the 19th century. The most memorable effect of time travel is probably "Yesterday's enterprise" from TNG. This is the ep where the Enterprise C comes through a temporal disturbance to the 24th century, apparently fleeing instead of going down defending a Klingon outpost. Immediately the present Enterprise is transformed from an exploration vessel to a warship, with the crew jaded by a lifetime of war with the Klingon Empire. Take the entire plot of Star Trek: First Contact. As soon as the Borg Sphere initiated the temporal rift, the population of Earth was transformed to Borg. Janeway breaks the temporal prime directive more than any other captain in Starfleet history. If traveling back in time didn't effect the same universe, then Captain Braxton would have been out of a job. Your suggestion that the old trek is still out there is in keeping with the Back to the Future model :P Watching the movie I kept thinking, "they have to win, Chris Pike needs to survive to command the Enterprise in the pilot." I had no idea that was the least of my temporal concerns. Rells, I'm with you on the destruction of Vulcan. That was quite a slap to the face. I also kind of felt like that had to be fixed somehow by the end of the movie. Maybe in a sequel - you never know, Star Trek III was just an excuse to bring Spock back from the dead.

I hear ya Toka, but the break thier own rules all the time. What about Quantum Reality? (name might be a bit off) Where you see hundreds if not thousands of Enterprises where slightly differnet choices lead to different realities. It was presenting the idea that every quantum reality plays out on some level of subspace and all the realites happen.... REally they just make up pseudo-science to serve themselves, but hey makes for great science fiction. I like the movie, enjoyed it thouroghly...
