So, I finally got tired of windows Vista on my laptop. Downloaded an ISO of Ubuntu (Figured I could run it in an emulator if I needed to). Burned it to a CD, trial run on a crappy PC (that I'm now posting from... karma).
And it hangs at 22% of an install on the laptop. Reburned the CD at a lower speed, now i hangs while loadin the pre-installer.
Haven't given up on fixing it yet, might be a few days before you see me back in game, however.

On the ubuntu CD should be a pair of utilities (in the cd boot menu). One is memtest86 the other is a CD verification tool (IIRC both are on the desktop install as well as the server CD but I don't have one to test right now).
Run memcheck86 on the laptop and see what happens. If that passes test the CD on the crappy PC first then again on the laptop. If that passes then something else is broken.
