It seems that the upcoming basic course this saturday has a LOT of alumni hoping to come along (space permitting). If there are enough (perhaps over 50 alum) would there be the possibility of having a fleet of alumni heading out on a roam while the new students are learning the basics. I do foresee a few possible issues: 1) You need recon & tacklers to support a fleet. There may not be enough to support 2 fleets. (If Agony has enough resources for 2 fleets though, this shouldn't be an issue.) 2) The roams may need to be held in different target areas - it wouldn't be good to have alumnus encouraging a bunch of smartbomb fit ships to come out to play in a region just as the Basic course starts their roam. (Frigates move fast, roaming in different areas shouldn't be too hard.) 3) Vent may have difficulty keeping up with 150-200 people on it. (Is the Agony vent capable of 150+?) 4) It may draw some more experienced players away from the basic class/roam. (The fleets could join up for the end of high-sec portion of the class?) 5) If the 2 fleets were to merge together at the end of the highsec portion of the course it may cause a delay for the pre-roam roam to find their way back to the class location. (Pre-roam could start back early, so not a huge problem). 6) Teaching is the primary function of the course - it seems unethical to take AGONY resources away from the class that people are paying to attend. (If Agony has enough resources for 2 fleets though, this shouldn't be an issue) I realize there are challenges to this idea (I even listed the big ones I could think of), but I thought I'd throw it out there given the possibilty that there are a lot of people looking for a frigate fleet roam on Saturday. I'm pretty sure most alumni wouldn't mind chipping in some additional isk for a preroam roam to offset interceptor/covops possible expenses. Since most players can make 10m isk in 4 hours of missioning (or even high sec mining *shudder* why did I train mining...), they're spending (losing out on) that much just by taking the time out to attend. I'm sure they wouldn't mind a nominal isk fee to support the fleet support ships. Feedback appreciated.

Agony will be focussing on the students, not on the Alumni roam. I don't know that we'll have the resources to facilitate a parallel fleet - I doubt it. Vent is limited by users - it was 100, there was talk of raising it to 150, but I don't believe that's been done yet (it means real $ out of Agony members pockets to host vent). It's certainly not capable of 200. By all means, you're welcome to run a parallel event, but you'l need to provide your own FC/Scouts/Skirmishers/etc. and find a suitable voice server.

There are a few agony pilots that would be available (ie. not assisting the instruction) and also not required untill the 0.0 roam starts..... If we can get a place for comms - then this isn't a bad idea... The Agony server tops out a bit before we need.... An alumni gang stirring things up isn't bad... it means more targets.... ... also alumni know that we might not return - so having a ship or two in the same system with the class isn't a bad idea..... What can we work out?
Men of war have long known that warriors must often abandon those verities they defend. Peace, human kindness, love... for they hold no meaning to the enemy. And so, to win, do we become what we despise... and despise what we become?

If this thread were moved to the PVP enrollement thread it would be more likely to be seen by alumni checking on the class info thread. If we're lucky, one of them may have a Vent server that could handle a 2nd fleet. Exposure in General thread is probably mostly agony.

We'll be bumping up Agony's vent to 150 users for this weekend, since we expect we might top 100. As far as starting a roam beforehand, the main problem is that people get tired, even people as awesome as Agony skirmishers, cov-ops, and FCs. Towards the end of long roams no matter how good your gangmates are, you do start to see more and more mistakes being made (not to mention people calling it a day and going out and doing non-EVE things). The issue with starting an alumni gang early is that doing so would draw Agony support pilots away, and starting things earlier would lead to people calling it quits earlier as well, shortening things for our students. Basic classes tend to already be stressful enough for the Agony pilots involved that I'd be pretty against the idea. Running more alumni gangs in general, and potentially running them alongside things like cov-ops/skirmishing/HSLR seminars, now that's doable. Long story short, Basic classes are too much of a strain to do both at once (as many have said before, it's often like herding cats), but we've discussed holding more alumni gangs (especially with the changes in Agony's recruitment policies), and they'd certainly be doable alongside specialist seminars.

Of course, there's nothing to stop you alumni guys from forming up yourselves and having some fun while the theory is going on - just use eve voice if needs be.
