The ventrilo overlay is a small graphical box that pops up over everything else to show you who is talking in ventrilo. The contents of the box, the time it spends on the screen and its location can be edited.

I found this incredibly useful in PVP Basic when I was unsure if the FC/Agony member was speaking or a student - Helped me realise that the j-word I had just heard was not a valid FC command! :)

My suggestions on how to set it up. This will provide the smallest and quickest window.
(These instructions are for version 3.0.4)
Click Setup. Then look for the Overlay tab and click that. Select only "Voice Stream Start" in the Popup Trigger Events on the right. Click Enable Overlay Support Click Auto Open Select Manually position Set the Popup Timeout to 90 seconds (gives you 90 seconds to position window) Only have "receiving from" selected on Status Page options. Select OK
The window will pop up in the top left. Now time to move it.
Right click on a grey area in ventrilo to bring up the menu (above the disconnect button will work) Mouse over View Mouse down to the bottom and left click "Manually Position Overlay" The overlay window is now "on your mouse" and you can move the window where you want. To drop the window where you want it just left click. Go back into Setup and to the Overlay tab. Deselect Auto Open Set Popup Timeout to 3. Timeout of 0 is very fast and anything over 5 seconds gets very bothersome. Select OK and you should be good to go.
Moving the window after setup.
Go back into Setup and to the Overlay tab. Click Auto Open Set the Popup Timeout to 90 seconds Select OK Right click on a grey area in ventrilo to bring up the menu (above the disconnect button will work) Mouse over View Mouse down to the bottom and left click "Manually Position Overlay" The overlay window is now "on your mouse" and you can move the window where you want. To drop the window where you want it just left click. Go back into Setup and to the Overlay tab. Deselect Auto Open Set Popup Timeout to 3 (or the time you were using). Select OK.
Do this as many times as you need till you get it where you are good with its location. I had it positioned so that it appeared in a small area of empty screen between the first target reticle and the "selected" window, so that it wouldn't obscure anything, even the gutter around the edge of the screen.

One last thing, this *ONLY* works when you are running EVE in windowed mode. But then, why would you limit the functionality of your PC by only having one program running at a time? ;)

Thanks for posting that, very handy guide. Also if (like me) you have a G15 then you can enable that option to show who is talking, when you are keyed up and which channel you are in.

Also usefull is the program preventrilo it will allow you to listen to music using windows media player or winamp while ventrilo is open, when someone starts talking the program pauses the music. (run the program as administrator under vista)
