This will tweak ventrilo to balance out the quiet people and the loud people. Enjoy! In vent, press setup. In the first tab, make sure 'Use DirectSound' is checked. Press the SFX button. Select 'Compressor' in the right box, then press the '<- Add' button. Select 'Compressor in the left box and press the 'Properties' button. Set the knobs to: Gain -7 (make this higher if people are too quiet) Attack .01 Release 500ish Threshold -31 Ratio 100.0 Pre Delay 4.0

I had to set the gain to +20 to even hear people at my old normal levels - so far so good though - thanks for the tips

Oooh, it does make a difference. Mine is at +15 for gain (treat the gain as your volume control), but otherwise the suggested post is good. What "normalization" does is detects incoming sound and lowers/boosts it to within an envelope of "comfortable" sound. So, if someone is crazy-loud, it senses the large volume within a few milliseconds and adjusts accordingly. You shouldn't notice any lag. These sorts of things are pretty quick. I had no idea Vent even did that crap. Nice! For students in classes, we should still turn off normalization and do sound checks to get them on an average volume level (especially for those not utilizing normalization), but for day-to-day use, this is going to be sweet.

There is little to no need to sticky this, for Rells posted the information here: http://www.agony-unl....php?content.59 And it is accessable from the Recently Added or Updated list on the left side of the screen. Kimmie, inadvertantly bumping this topic with this post.

Possible alternative setting, any feedback would be welcome. Gain: 9 Attack: 0.1 Release: 996 Threshold: -37 Ratio: 1.0 Pre-Delay: 4 I dunno why but this seemed to kill some of the tinniness I had with the listed setup

Didn't work very well for me... :-( People were coming in at various volumes, someone was very loud and still blew my eardrums out! ;-) The first settings do sound a bit tinny for me I must admit (although I'm used to it now), but they do an excellent job of making everyone sound the same volume (for me at least).

It worked great for me for about 2 days then for some reason Direct Sound stopped working and my headphones will now only work with DirectSound unchecked. No idea what happened, I am using Logitech DSP400 USB headphones.

USB headphones?

Never really liked them. It mean's your changing signal types too much im my opinion.

I would only use them if my soundjacks were stuffed, had no money to get a sound card (or no PCI/PCI-E slots spare on my motherboard) and had a USB port free.

That normalisation setting looks interesting. They tweaked for XP or vista? I am assuming XP.

I'll just stick to sound effects for normalising people's volumes.

EDIT: oh. post is like 6 months without a post. my bad >.<
If your going to crash, might as well go out in a blaze of glory.

Just joined corp yesterday. Used Teamspeak for the two years previous so my Vent was still setup as the default. I can honestly say that the difference between the default and now is night and day. Great information - thanks!
