Does anyone know if the signup has been formally delayed? Or have I done the math wrong on the signup time? (I thought it would have opened 40 odd minutes ago.) ziglot

This system is not good because it selects people who can only 1> be around at the time the class is scheduled in order to take it and 2> be around at the time the course opens and hang around long enough for it to actually open.

Sorry for the delay in getting the class opened - unfortunately Rip was detained in RL and not able to get on to open the class on time. We know that the new system is not perfect, however we do feel it is better than the "keep checking the forum / mailing list every day and hope for the best" approach we used to use. The classes are scheduled to open at around the same time of day the class will take place, with the intention being that if the class time suits your timezone, then so will the enrolment opening. This will not be suitable for all students, however hopefully this works for the majority. We do try to make it as fair to everyone as possible, however we are always happy to receive any suggestions as to how we can improve our enrolment system! :-)

No matter what system is used, given the demand for the classes someone will miss out. I say it's much better than hoping you get lucky to be on when and if it opens up. With a set enrollment time at least I have a chance to clear the slate and be here if I really want to sign up, and if I can't then I'll try to make the next one. Fair enough for me.

Was on the road... stopped twice at a cyber cafe... once at 2200, and again at 2310.... not opened yet. Got home, logged in to find the class closed. Replied in hopes of attending.

We do try to make it as fair to everyone as possible, however we are always happy to receive any suggestions as to how we can improve our enrolment system! :-)

It's definately better than the previous system. Perhaps you could allocate a second for each class to back up the main, who would take over the enrolment thread after an agreed time in the event the main were delayed.

Or maybe a brief proviso to the enrolment thread opening date sentence stating something like '...however we cannot guarantee this time to the second, this a game, we are volunteers, real life etc etc', just to remind people of realities.

Just wondering, are class times alternated at all to accomodate differing timezones? I'm quite sure I can make the next basic class regardless of what time it is (I've saved up sick leave at work, if needs be ), but just for peace of mind for future classes- is this thought about when the schedules are made?

Yes. We have instructors from different timezones and thus we have classes for different timezones as well.
