A buddy of mine who started Eve about the same time as I did decided to go the pirate route. He is currently a -10 red flashy evil guy trying to get his sec status back up so he can pawn noobs in empire. He convo'd me this evening about a brilliant idea he had. What he descried to me was basically the Lofty scam. I was very shocked that he did not know that Lofty had been nerfed to zero and no longer worked. Does the general Eve playing population really not read the patch notes? I don't really 'play' the game that much anymore and I still read the patch notes.

In all seriousness I use to be fairly active on eve-o forums, when you are you tend to notice the swarm of new posts when a new blog or patch notes are put up.

I know a lot of players that never visit the eve website unles they need to download a patch or new client.

Lately I have been a good deal busier at work (where I tended to do most of my forum reading)
Silicon Buddha's - Fly Reckless Podcast has been my favoite way to keep up with all the interesting things on the commute to and from work lately

It's when Lofty29 used to ask for help with a l4 mission, then as the tasty victi... err friendly helper warped to the mission room, then the friend in need brought a wartarget into the gang. Lofty would, at that point, warp to the mission room and attack the poor sod and concord wouldn't react.

so, it worked like this.

A) Victim

B) Lofty (at war with D's corp)

c) "carebear" in need of help

d) wartarget

so C asks for help, then gangs with A. After forming a gang, he then brings D to the fleet. A never gets a warning, but B can now legally attack A since A is ganged with a wartarget.

They've sinced "patched" that.

meanwhile Lofty29 and other empire pirates made billions killing and ransoming faction fitted mission running ships in empire by inviting them into these gangs ... this was going on for a while until Empyrean Age patch when factional warfare was introduced and this game mechanic got in a way of people ganging up for FW or something, i do not remember the whole reasoning behind this, but it was changed those times if you ganged up to do a mission together with somebody you did not know there was always a risk that it might have ended up with you getting ganked by 3 battleships when you came out of warp at supposed mission location

I never read all the patch notes, but I do scroll through and make sure I know what changes will effect 0.0 life. Could give a shit less about empire.

My ex corp mates in Project Nemesis have taken the Lofty Scam to its next state of evolution. They now join random corps (apply to a bunch, there's always one out there that takes just anyone) then go missioning with them, and when they end up with someone in a decent ship - they use the 'corpmate mechanic' that allows shooting your corpmates to gank them. Takes more social engineering and time, but they still get their kicks :)

Wow my classes were so long ago the link stopped working. Look I took a bunch of them ok? It was a long time ago. Just trust me on it.
