I know some of you folks like historical quotes and I'm a big fan myself. In fact, I sell wargames (board variety) for a living so I'm quite into simulations, military history, etc... Here are some goodies that you might not have come across before - some of which have EVE relevence: "A thing appears random only through the incompleteness of our knowledge." - Baruch Spinoza "Artillerymen believe the world consists of two types of people: Other artillerymen and targets." - unknown "I don't measure a man's success by how high he climbs but how high he bounces when he hits bottom." - George S. Patton "You hit somebody with your fist, not with your fingers spread." - Heinz Guderian "Either I will find a way, or I will make one." - Philip Sidney Add more! Cheers, Maudite PS: My forum avatar is a US WW II tank destroyer emblem. Fitting for EVE if you trade the tank for a spaceship.

Hmmm...I can't find one about pants, but how about:

That's Mr. Hand Grenade, Bamar. Not Mr. Hand.

Continuing with the Mark Twain quotes: I once sent a dozen of my friends a telegram saying ‘flee at once – all is discovered.’ They all left town immediately.

I've been a student of English Literature (top shelf stuff ofc... not nasty down-market bramble mags) for some time now. This is my favourite quotation: "I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay I sleep all night and I work all day I cut down trees, I eat my lunch I go to the lavat'ry On Wednesdays I go shopping And have buttered scones for tea I cut down trees, I skip and jump I like to press wild flow'rs I put on women's clothing And hang around in bars I cut down trees, I wear high heels Suspenders and a bra I wish I'd been a girlie Just like my dear Papa" - Bill Shakespeare or was it Monty Python... I gets the 2 confuzzled. As is goes I'm a bit of a fan of George Orwell, so here's 3 of the best (imho): - "All the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting" - "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf" - "Patriotism is usually stronger than class hatred, and always stronger than internationalism"

This is the best time of the day—the dawn The final cleansing breath unsullied yet By acrid fume or death’s cacophony The rank refuse of unchained ambition And pray, deny me not but know me now, Your faithful retainer stands resolute To serve his liege lord without recompense Perchance to fall and perish namelessly No flag-ddestroyd bier or muffled drum to set The cadence for a final dress parade But it was not always thus—remember? Once you worshiped me and named me a god In many tongues and made offering lest I exact too terrible a tribute Take heed for I am weary, ancient And decrepit now and my time grows short There are no honorable frays to join Only mean death dealt out in dibs and dabs Or horror unleashed from across oceans Assail me not with noble policy For I care not at all for platitude And surrender such tedious detail To greater minds than mine and nimbler tongues Singular in their purpose and resolve And presuming to speak for everyman Oh, for another time, a distant field And there a mortal warrior’s lonely grave But duty charges me remain until The end the last battle of the last war Until that ‘morrow render unto me That which is mine my stipend well deserved The fairest flower of your progeny Your sons, your daughters your hopes and your dreams The cruel consequence of your conceit - Steve Earle

"All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are close at hand. Hold out bait to the enemy. Feign disorder, then crush him." - Sun Tzu "The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretence was always unnecessary. A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one's will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic. And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp." - Winston, George Orwell's "1984" "Ah yes, [life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness]... Life? What 'right' to life has a man who is drowning in the Pacific? The ocean will not hearken to his cries. What 'right' to life has a man who must die to save his children? If he chooses to save his own life, does he do so as a matter of 'right'? If two men are starving and cannibalism is the only alternative to death, which man's right is 'unalienable'? And is it 'right'? As to liberty, the heroes who signed the great document pledged themselves to buy liberty with their lives. Liberty is never unalienable; it must be redeemed regularly with the blood of patriots or it always vanishes. Of all the so-called natural human rights that have ever been invented, liberty is least likely to be cheap and is never free of cost. The third 'right'?—the 'pursuit of happiness'? It is indeed unalienable but it is not a right; it is simply a universal condition which tyrants cannot take away nor patriots restore. Cast me into a dungeon, burn me at the stake, crown me king of kings, I can 'pursue happiness' as long as my brain lives—but neither gods nor saints, wise men nor subtle drugs, can ensure that I will catch it." - Lt Col. Dubois, Robert A Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" And my favorite of Heinlein's work, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress: "I will accept any rules that you feel necessary to your freedom. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do." ______ "Thing that got me was not her list of things she hated, since she was obviously crazy as a Cyborg, but fact that always somebody agreed with her prohibitions. Must be a yearning deep in human heart to stop other people from doing as they please. Rules, laws — always for other fellow. A murky part of us, something we had before we came down out of trees, and failed to shuck when we stood up. Because not one of those people said: "Please pass this so that I won't be able to do something I know I should stop." Nyet, tovarishchee, was always something they hated to see neighbors doing. Stop them "for their own good" — not because speaker claimed to be harmed by it." ______ "Comrades, I beg of you — do not resort to compulsory taxation. There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him." "You have put your finger on the dilemma of all government — and the reason I am an anarchist. The power to tax, once conceded, has no limits; it contains until it destroys. I was not joking when I told them to dig into their own pouches. It may not be possible to do away with government — sometimes I think that government is an inescapable disease of human beings. But it may be possible to keep it small and starved and inoffensive — and can you think of a better way than by requiring the governors themselves to pay the costs of their antisocial hobby?" "Democracy can't work. Mathematicians, peasants, and animals, that's all there is — so democracy, a theory based on the assumption that mathematicians and peasants are equal, can never work. Wisdom is not additive; its maximum is that of the wisest man in a given group." - Heinlein again, in "Glory Road" And finally: "Well, that's Philosophy I've read, And Law and Medicine, and I fear Theology, too, from A to Z; Hard studies all, that have cost me dear. And so I sit, poor silly man No wiser now than when I began." - Faust, lines 354-359.

"SPEAK! speak! thou fearful guest! Who, with thy hollow breast Still in rude armor drest, Comest to daunt me! Wrapt not in Eastern balms, But with thy fleshless palms Stretched, as if asking alms, Why dost thou haunt me?" Then, from those cavernous eyes Pale flashes seemed to rise, As when the Northern skies Gleam in December; And, like the water's flow Under December's snow, Came a dull voice of woe From the heart's chamber. "I was a Viking old! My deeds, though manifold, No Skald in song has told, No Saga taught thee! Take heed, that in thy verse Thou dost the tale rehearse, Else dread a dead man's curse; For this I sought thee. "Far in the Northern Land, By the wild Baltic's strand, I, with my childish hand, Tamed the gerfalcon; And, with my skates fast-bound, Skimmed the half-frozen Sound, That the poor whimpering hound Trembled to walk on. "Oft to his frozen lair Tracked I the grisly bear, While from my path the hare Fled like a shadow; Oft through the forest dark Followed the were-wolf's bark, Until the soaring lark Sang from the meadow. "But when I older grew, Joining the corsair's crew, O'er the dark sea I flew With the marauders. Wild was the life we led; Many the souls that sped, Many the hearts that bled, By our stern orders. "Many a wassail-bout Wore the long winter out; Often our midnight shout Set the cocks crowing. As we the Berserk's tale Measured in cups of ale, Draining the oaken pail, Filled to o'erflowing. "Once as I told in glee Tales from the stormy sea, Soft eyes did gaze on me, Burning yet tender; And as the white stars shine On the dark Norway pine, On that dark heart of mine Fell their soft splendor. "I wooed the blue-eyed maid, Yielding, yet half afraid, And in the forest's shade Our vows were plighted. Under its loosened vest Fluttered her little breast, Like birds within their nest By the hawk frighted. "Bright in her father's hall Shields gleamed upon the wall, Loud sang the minstrels all, Chanting his glory; When of old Hildebrand I asked his daughter's hand, Mute did the minstrels stand To hear my story. "While the brown ale he quaffed, Loud then the champion laughed, And as the wind-gusts waft The sea-foam brightly, So the loud laugh of scorn, Out of those lips unshorn, From the deep drinking-horn Blew the foam lightly. "She was a Prince's child, I but a Viking wild, And though she blushed and smiled, I was discarded! Should not the dove so white Follow the sea-mew's flight, Why did they leave that night Her nest unguarded? "Scarce had I put to sea, Bearing the maid with me, Fairest of all was she Among the Norsemen! When on the white sea-strand, Waving his arméd hand, Saw we old Hildebrand, With twenty horsemen. "Then launched they to the blast, Bent like a reed each mast, Yet we were gaining fast, When the wind failed us; And with a sudden flaw Came round the gusty Skaw, So that our foe we saw Laugh as he hailed us. "And as to catch the gale Round veered the flapping sail, 'Death!' was the helmsman's hail, 'Death without quarter!' Midships with iron keel, Struck we her ribs of steel; Down her black hulk did reel Through the black water! "As with his wings aslant, Sails the fierce cormorant, Seeking some rocky haunt, With his prey laden, So toward the open main, Beating to sea again, Through the wild hurricane, Bore I the maiden. "Three weeks we westward bore, And when the storm was o'er, Cloudlike we saw the shore Stretching to leeward; There for my lady's bower Built I a lofty tower, Which, to this very hour, Stands looking seaward. "There lived we many years; Time dried the maiden's tears; She had forgot her fears, She was a mother; Death closed her mild blue eyes, Under that tower she lies; Ne'er shall the sun arise On such another! "Still grew my bosom then, Still as a stagnant fen! Hateful to me were men, The sunlight hateful! In the vast forest here, Clad in my warlike gear, Fell I upon my spear, Oh, death was grateful! "Thus, seamed with many scars, Bursting these prison bars, Up to its native stars My soul ascended! There from the flowing bowl Deep drinks the warrior's soul, Skoal! to the Northland! skoal!" --Thus the tale ended. Longfellow

gah!!! you'd be surprised at how many soldiers that i trained initially DIDN'T read that.....and pointed the mine the wrong damn direction.....had to beat crap outta a few of them 'til they got it right (figuratively, of course)
