IMPORTANT: SMALL CHANGES TO ENROLLMENT PLEASE READ BELOW!

In order to learn how to fight back, the student of PVP needs to realize that Eve Online combat is incredibly rich and diverse. It requires not only character skill points but also a good amount of player skills. The difference between a lost encounter and a won encounter is more often the player skills than the character skills. The lessons taught in PVP-BASIC are fundamental to Eve combat and make a starting platform for the study of tactics, strategy and dynamics of Eve PVP. These skills are applicable to all kinds of Eve combat, regardless of whether you're defending your mining fleet from Pirate attacks, or stalking lawless space in search of targets of your own. The goal of PVP-BASIC is to provide you with the basic skills and confidence required to fly as part of a successful PVP gang, as well as being an introduction to combat in 0.0 space. This class is aimed at players who are new to PVP, or with limited PVP experience. The core topics this class will be covering are:

IMPORTANT: SMALL CHANGES TO ENROLLMENT PLEASE READ! (Effective 13th April 2012)
We have recently developed a program to parse the enrollment thread and process enrollments. This will, hopefully, make managing our class enrollments faster and less prone to error. The new system will "parse" the first two lines of any post in this thread. The first line must be the usual enrollment information, the format for enrolling is unchanged but we now ask that if you create an additional post in this thread, such as for cancelling, that you include this line in that post. The second line of each post is now reserved for "keywords" that describe what your post is about. Keywords are only necessary if you are registering as an alumni, paying with corp credit, cancelling, have a question, etc. The third line and beyond is for any other information/questions/etc. you may have.

We're using the new program for this thread, and ask that you post in the following manner for this class:

AGONY FORUM DISPLAY NAME - PILOT NAME (CORP TICKER) <<First Line (unchanged) - put in every post in this thread

ALUMNI, CORP ACCOUNT, CLASS CREDIT, CANCEL, STANDBY, QUESTION << KEYWORDS HERE ONLY. 2nd line reserved for KEYWORDS, if needed

ANY OTHER INFORMATION << 3rd line for anything else at all, if needed

EXAMPLE ENROLLMENT POSTS:

Bamar - Christina Bamar (AGONY)

Bamar - Christina Bamar (AGONY)
Alumni

Bamar - Christina Bamar (AGONY)
CORP ACCOUNT
Please pay for my class from the Agony corp account thanks!

Bamar - Christina Bamar (AGONY)
CANCEL
Please credit me for a future class

Bamar - Christina Bamar (AGONY)
CLASS CREDIT
Please use my class credit from the class I missed on 17th March

If you chose to be creative, sloppy, use different brackets, put in your pilot name twice or anything else like that we may not process your enrollment and you may lose your spot.

#270275 [Feedback] PVP Basic September 15/16 @ 02:00

Posted by Greygal on 15 September 2012 - 07:41 AM

I really enjoyed having you all in class today! I thank you again for your patience with my communication issues :( So frustrating but we survived! Sorry I didn't get ya'll ganked in hisec! This was a terrific class, coms discipline was perfect and ya'll moved together during our practicals almost like you've been doing it forever!

This class I tested out a slightly different approach to the same material that we always cover in a Basic class, in that I focused more on the *roles* each pilot flies and what the FC expects of each pilot in that role, and somewhat less on the technical specifications of the individual modules. I would like it if you would let me know if you liked that part of the class - if it made sense, if it helped prepare you better to understand what to do during the roam, and to better understand the part you play in the fleet. Obviously you might not be able to comment on that until after the roam!

I think I missed a few questions that were asked, for that I apologize - feel free to ask tomorrow before the roam. I'll be in voice about 30-45 minutes before the roam to answer any questions you have that were missed during class today, or that you didn't think of until later!

We went over a lot of material and managed to run only 12 minutes late! Think that is a new record!

I will update this post after tomorrow's roam with info about the roam.

We welcome your feedback - good, bad, indifferent. So let us have it!

--------------------------

So the roam was a bit quieter than we'd have liked - would have been nice to have more explosions! But the pacing of it wasn't bad, we didn't wait TOO long between kills. It was just a bit hard to find gangs to fight ... nothing wrong with the small kills of course! I believe we destroyed about 30 ships plus some pods total...

The bombers were out in force! I lost track fast how many bombs got thrown at us! We had a small gang of Rifters out playing bait for the main fleet which was mostly lost to bombs bombs bombs!

We had one particularly good fight which resulted in some nice kills and a good portion of the fleet in pods, half of the fleet podded back to Tanoo and the other half of the fleet in pods and noob ships in Esa, with a 25-system trip to regroup the fleet!

I think my favorite kill of the night was this Loki killthink he had enough sensor boosters? I believe it was also our most expensive kill.

Almost six hours of roaming later, we called it quits... sort-of... a handful of die-hards went out with me and learned quickly why GG sticks to organizing the fleet and not commanding it. We went into Curse and played station games with an Arbitrator and a target-painting T3 tornado who quickly put yours truly into a pod. Then we toyed with a rifter - all T1 fit! - that we couldn't catch for the life of us but eventually we DID make a pretty explosion out of him. I then took us back to hisec where we called it quits for real.

The fleet moved very well together, coms were perfection, and very few got lost. Was so much fun flying with all of you and can't wait to fly with you again soon! Many many thanks to all of Agony, our Alumni and our patient students for flying with us today!

#363710 [FEEDBACK] PvP-Basic + roam 4 April @ 0730

Posted by Aximag on 04 April 2015 - 08:01 PM

Agony,

Thanks for the class and the roam.  I've been playing Eve Online since release day but almost entirely as an industrialist -- so I have more ISK than sense.  The organization that you guys have placed around getting into PvP has provided an entry point into part of the game I've always wanted to try.  I especially appreciate the sportsmanship and maturity on display.  So rare in online games today...

So I lost my Executioner to the Chimera we ran into because I totally forgot all the PvP theory when the pew pew started.  I look forward to flying with all y'all (I'm from Texas) now that I am at least aware of the basics of fleet action.  Perhaps I'll fly smarter next time and stop sucking so much.

Best, and "hop hop!"

Aximag.

#358655 The Passing of A Sci-Fi Icon

Posted by Species 8472 on 27 February 2015 - 07:27 PM

We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet it should be noted that in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human.

#299635 [Feedback] PVP-BASIC July 5/6 @ 23:30

Posted by Greygal on 06 July 2013 - 09:55 AM

Had a terrific class today, really good questions and a lot of fun all around (especially since 99.9% of you had Smart Assery V trained!)  - we even killed a flashy Atron (who gave us a nice crash-the-gate-repeatedly chase!)  He wasn't real happy with us though!

I've updated the graduate list on the original announcement thread, if I missed anyone, just let me know (post in this thread or send me a message).

I'll update this post with some details from the roam after it happens later today.  In the meantime, feel free to share any feedback you may have about the class - good, bad or indifferent! We love feedback, and use it to continuously improve our classes!

Really looking forward to flying with all of you on the roam - it's looking to be an epic roam!

EDIT:  Roam was epic good fun! More than 230 systems traveled... lots of good fights!  Special thanks to RvB Ganked and Brave Newbies for starting our roam out with two epic, awesome, fights, damn good brawls!  Luv ya!!

Most valuable killmail was a pod worth over 2 billion!! good kills, will write more later, but this should say a lot:

ZUJmumd.png?1

Jalisco wrote another poem for us, which I share below :)

It's summer in Agony, the fleets are in bloom.
And PvP Basic has just met its doom.

We listened to Greygal and took her advice.
No lemmings, no “J” word, we still paid the price.

We webbed them, we scrammed them, we fought the good fight.
We tackled, we orbited, did everything right.

Now we're all in noob ships or woke up in goo.
And GG as usual, has been 'sploded too.

Smart bombs and bubbles and hot drops, oh, my!
Like a leaf in the wind – now watch us all fly.

We're headed back home now, I know we can make it.
I'll be back in fleet when my liver can take it.

We know these are pixels which don't really matter
But real life is BS so scatter, scatter, scatter.

#286380 What's it like to be in Agony?

Posted by Alistone Malikite on 27 February 2013 - 03:45 AM

As far as I can tell, all the core members of Echo dual box to some extent. I thinks this promotes a culture of forum whoring. We're used to checking multiple windows constantly. What this means to the community at large is that you should always engage Agony's Echo pilots. I assure you we're not paying attention. That covops decloaked at zero on a gate was an oops. Shoot it. You will catch us unawares. Just my 0.02 isk...

Two weeks ago we had greate basic class and roam with Azual , with over 50 ppl ready and willing to fly. Next day epic roam with 50 students and manny alumni and agony pilots. After changes in destroyers maybe someone will find some time to run wolfpack class. It was so good to see Caldak and Azual leading fleet together.

#326441 [FEEDBACK] PVP-INTERMEDIATE 15th March @ 21:00

Posted by Quest on 16 March 2014 - 05:52 AM

Thanks Agony for another fun class; it was fun to be the emergency logi boss. My only trouble tonight was remembering that Caldak says "hop" instead of "jump"... I missed a few gates.

Unfortunatelly that is a well known side effect of prolong exposure to Agony. He's been in the Corp even longer than me and is completely unable to say the j-word in any context whatsoever.

Just the other day he went to Zara to buy a woolen turtleneck hopper!

#309899 [Feedback] PVP-BASIC October 4/5th, 2013 @18:00

Posted by Jeremiah Cole on 06 October 2013 - 10:26 PM

Also I'm pretty fresh (8 weeks in) but when ships were spotted maybe a summary of what the ship is and its strengths/weaknesses would be good? a lot of the more experienced players know all the ship types, but for me I struggle with anything that's not gallente. ie. the fleet spots a caracel, what does that mean?

Phrase

Learning the ships is something that comes with time and changes patch to patch. Agony members are happy to answer questions regarding ships but it's up to the individual to learn the varying ship types/strengths in their own time. If Agony taught them all, we'd be here for a lot longer than just a couple of hours!

Something I was linked to during my first Basics class was a ship flashcard website. I've dug it up for you to take a look at :)

http://phase.org/Eve.../view/flashcard

I still use it to make sure my knowledge of ships is constantly expanding.

#294338 [Feedback] RvB Private PVP-BASIC class, May 18/19, 2013

Posted by Star Juggler on 19 May 2013 - 11:27 AM

I've been with RvB for almost a year, and I thought I knew the ins and out of fleet fighting.

Your explanation - and demonstration - of how the Hydra fleet works was a pleasant surprise. I had no idea... (I know, I'm not the brightest Star in the night sky)

I never touch ECM - sounds a bit complicated and we hardly ever use them in RvB - but I flew an ecm Griffin in our low sec roam, and I loved it!

Maybe it wasn't the most glorius ecm moment when I jammed a Brave Newbie Badger, but still! - I flew an ecm ship! And the Badger was skinned!

Your efficient demonstration of the inefficiency of in-warp bookmarks was scary. They should be called unsafe-spots. You asked us to individually bookmark safespots, and in one group of pilots, 5 ships created the same safespot. My safespot was shared with 9 other pilots, and we all thought we had the safest of safespots. Instead of explaining, you just showed us - it never gets more efficient than that. Really brilliant!

That class was packed with information and knowledge and experience.

I'm sorry I couldn't attend the last part with scanning, because I sorely need that. I hope I can find a seat on one of your other classes to learn about scanning!

And I'm sure my Griffin would have made all the difference in that final fight against TEST. Just look at the BNI Badger!

Thanks, Greygal - I enjoyed that evening!

Criticism? Not much. I have a hard time finding 4 hours to play straight in a row (family life), so maybe classes should be shorter and distributed over more days. But I'm sure you've thought about this as you have thought about everything else.

A final note on the backwardness of this student. The teamspeak server has a choice of gender for voice instruction: male and female voice. When you first started speaking, I routinely changed the Teamspeak gender, but nothing happened! Took me a few seconds to understand my mistake :-)

Guys I don't care what happened I was proud to be AGONY for that match. Phenomenal job, felt it could have gone either way! To have it not be a total rout after all the "experts" wrote you off, that's fucking incredible. To have it be so close is a testament to your creativity and piloting skills.
